A child dies of malaria every 30 seconds in Africa. At least one million infants and children under five in sub-Saharan Africa die each year from the mosquito-borne disease. While it is one of the greatest threats to human and economic welfare on earth, malaria is both preventable and treatable if addressed properly and quickly.
Defeating malaria is an achievable and affordable goal by using bed nets to protect children against the disease. One bed net costs only $10 (including transportation, distribution and education on its use).
To really make an impact, all members of a family should be protected. In a home that is run by a mother or a grandmother who is supporting a lot of orphans (very typical of families in Kireka), if she gets malaria, the whole family suffers.
The goal with this project is to purchase 100 nets for families at the LiA Kireka Center. Life in Africa Foundation -Ufanda and the LiA Kireka Center will join hands to run this program which will include distribution of the nets, education on the use and installation of the nets, and follow up visits to ensure the nets are used correctly and to document the effect of the use of nets on the community.
