LiA Kireka is a community-based organization that was originally started by Life in Africa that has existed since 1999 in Uganda. One of the major aims and objectives Life in Africa Foundation was to form and empower communities to be able to be self-sustaining. It was for this reason that LiA Kireka was formed, and it is a registered Community Based Organization (CBO) in Kampala, Uganda. It is member owned and member run. Each active member has a vote on any decision that is made.
LiA Kireka is located in the outskirts of Kampala in an area commonly called Banda-Kireka or the Acholi Quarters. Most of the members live in the quarters, which is an IDP camp for people displaced by the war in the north. It operates from a center that is supported in part by Life in Africa Foundation – Uganda.
The purpose of LiA Kireka is in four basic areas:
Internet4Change: This program is designed to equip members and non members with computer related skills that can enable to link up both locally and internationally.
Micro Success: Our community is composed of the poorest of the poor, yet many have good business or developmental ideas for self sustainability This program gives them the opportunity for small business start up loans, business management training, and group/community business opportunities.
Childrens’ Program: Provides assistance for school fees for those who cannot afford to attend school. Also provides and supports the LiA Kids Club which offers activities, nutrition and counseling for poor children.
Community Craft Production: Encouranges and assists members in the development, production and distribution of crafts. Currently they are making recycled beads for jewelry and some basket. The monies earned from this program not only helps to support the center, but also provides needed income for the members.
